No Dogs or Anglophones: 'Grenadiers March' a Bittersweet Pill

No Dogs or Anglophones: 'Grenadiers March' a Bittersweet Pill
The Plains of Abraham was a key victory for the British that shaped North America as we know it today. But the tragedies and price paid by the French Canadians at the hands of the (eventual) victors must not be overlooked. This is one but many reasons to not overlook and trivialise the sacrifices of the French Canadians as equal partners in what eventually became Canada. I know I will think of this every time I hear the Grenadiers March.

Terrorism of the terrine

Terrorism of the terrine: "Unlike humans, ducks and geese lack a gag reflex. Their oesophagi have an insensitive coating, allowing them to swallow whole fish. Gavage mimics a natural process by which birds gorge themselves before migratory flight, even if the foie-gras-producing ducks never actually head south in the winter.

The attempt to prohibit foie gras is an example of our illiberal times, where private activities such as eating are fair game for criticism and moral posturing. It reflects the difficulty we have in understanding where our food comes from, and our estrangement from its production. And it fails to recognise that, for many, foie gras is une fete gastronomique, one of the world's 10 great flavours, on a par with truffles and caviar.

Even if you don't like the taste or idea of foie gras, that doesn't give you the right to tell others what to eat. What's at stake is the individual's right to choose what to consume, regardless of whether its production is offensive to some. In the end, the decision to eat or to sell foie gras must come down to personal taste, and not intimidation."

Well said! Bring on the foie!

Btw, 100% kudos to Martin Picard for not giving in to ignorant activists and even more ignorant organizers of the Ottawa Winterlude festival who caved in to a small group of cuisine terrorists. Lets all support brave souls like Martin by frequenting his restaurant(s) and ordering lots of foie gras!
